Why did India's rank drop?

In this report, India is far behind compared to its neighboring countries. This is being attributed to the decline in life expectancy. The report states that human development in India has declined in the last two years. This decline is based on India's development in the last five years. The life expectancy value in India has come down from 69.7 to 67.2 years. Recent global challenges such as the corona virus and the circumstances arising out of the Russo-Ukraine war are also responsible for this decline. However, India has retained its 132nd position in the Gender Development Index.

What is HDI?

The Human Development Index (HDI) was conceptualized by the Pakistani economist Mehboob-ul-Haq. The first Human Development Index was released in the year 1990. It is calculated using the following four indicators:

1. life expectancy at birth

2. average years of schooling

3. expected years of schooling

4. per capita gross national income
