Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to Samarkand, Uzbekistan to attend the 22nd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on 15 and 16 September. The SCO summit for the year 2022 will be held in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The city is located 300 km from Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
SCO Summit 2022:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to Samarkand, Uzbekistan to attend this year's summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on 15 and 16 September. All preparations have been made for his journey. At present, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is headed by Uzbekistan. This is the first time since June 2019 that this summit is being held face to face or in physical form, before it was held physically in 2019 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

2. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and heads of state of other member countries are attending this summit.
3. In this meeting, strategic partnership including global issues like terrorism, Russia-Ukraine conflict will be discussed. Apart from this, bilateral talks of member countries will also be held.
4. India will also assume the chairmanship of the group for the year 2023, which will continue till September 2023, the next meeting of the SCO.
Why this meeting is important for India:
1. India will also hold bilateral talks with the member countries in this summit, which becomes very important in the current global scenario.
Talks with China:
India will discuss other bilateral issues with China in the wake of recent border disputes. This will be the first meeting with the Prime Minister of India and the President of China since November 2019. Their bilateral meeting took place during the BRICS summit in Brazil in November 2019.
Dialogue with Russia:
Apart from this, India will discuss bilateral issues with Russia, and will also try to give a new dimension to the bilateral relations between the two countries. Significantly, India is importing crude oil from Russia at a cheap price despite pressure from Western countries due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
About SCO:
SCO is an inter-governmental organization. It was established on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China. It currently has 9 member countries. Which follows China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran. India became a full member of the SCO in June 2017.
Structure:
Its structure includes SCO Secretariat, Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS), Council of Heads of Government etc.
Observer:
At present there are three observer countries Afghanistan, Mongolia and Belarus. Those who are interested in full membership of this organization.
Dialogue Partners:
The other six dialogue partners of SCO are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
Secretary-General:
The SCO Secretary-General is elected for a three-year term. The current Secretary General of the SCO is China's Zhang Ming, who assumed his position on 1 January 2022.
Official language:
The official languages of SCO are Russian and Chinese.
