BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting:
The Foreign Minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar participated in the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting. This meeting was held under the chairmanship of South Africa. It was led by South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Nlady Pandor. The meeting, held in New York, was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavroff, Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Alberto Franco Franca and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
What issues were discussed?
1. The member states discussed the activities of the group, including the ongoing global sequence of events, and the issues included in the UN agenda.
2. Global issues: Member countries have shared their views on financial, political, security and economic issues included in the UN agenda. Along with this, the commitment of cooperation has also been reiterated.
3. COVID-19: Members have accepted the decision taken at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference on the TRIPS Agreement to cover the production and supply of COVID-19 diagnostics and medical products.
4. Member States reiterated their commitment to strengthen and reform the multilateral system, in particular the United Nations and its principal organs.
5. Terrorism: Rejecting double standards in combating terrorism and extremism, member countries have stressed on working together.
6. All members were committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries.
7. Ukraine: Members reiterate their commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences and disputes on the Ukraine issue and support all efforts conducive to its peaceful resolution.
8. Sustainable Development: The BRICS members called for implementing and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in a balanced and integrated manner.
Hosting BRICS 2023:
The year 2023 BRICS summit will be chaired by South Africa. At the same time, the Foreign Minister of India has assured full cooperation in making the South African presidency a success. Other members including Russia have also agreed to this. This year BRICS was hosted by China, which was organized virtual.
